Countertop Restored

Countertop Restoration & Repair

From kitchens and bathrooms to commercial reception areas, countertops serve as a central feature in countless spaces. Yet over time, everyday use can lead to stains, chips, cracks, and dull spots—whether they’re made from natural stone (like marble or granite), engineered stone (like quartz or terrazzo), or solid surfaces (like Corian®). At Capitol Stone Care, we specialize in countertop restoration and repairs across Washington, DC, Maryland, and Virginia, helping you maintain surfaces that look as good as new for years to come.

Countertop Materials We Service

  • Natural Stone: Marble, granite, travertine, limestone, slate, etc.
  • Engineered Stone: Quartz surfaces (Cambria®, Caesarstone®, Silestone®, etc.), terrazzo, and other composite materials.
  • Solid Surface: Corian® and similar acrylic-based surfaces.

Common Countertop Issues

STAINS & DISCOLORATION

  • Natural & Engineered Stone: Liquids like red wine, coffee, or oil can seep into porous stone if not sealed properly.
  • Corian®: Although non-porous, harsh chemicals or heat can cause discoloration or dull spots.

CHIPS & CRACKS

  • Stone & Quartz: Dropping heavy objects or consistent pressure on vulnerable areas (e.g., sink cutouts) can lead to structural damage.
  • Corian®: While generally more forgiving, Corian can still chip or crack around edges if struck forcefully.

SCRATCHES & ETCHING

  • Natural Stone: Acidic substances (lemon juice, vinegar) and abrasive cleaners can etch or dull calcium-based stones (marble, limestone).
  • Quartz: Scratch-resistant but not scratch-proof; abrasive pads and direct cutting can leave marks.
  • Corian®: Easily scratched by rough materials or misuse, but can typically be sanded and polished back to its original finish.

DULLNESS & WEAR

  • Stone & Quartz: Heat, chemical cleaners, or heavy use may cause loss of shine or a patchy appearance.
  • Corian®: Over time, surface scratches and general wear can create a dull or uneven finish.

IMPROPER SEALING OR RESIN/SURFACE WEAR

  • Stone: Requires periodic sealing to prevent deeper staining and moisture penetration.
  • Quartz: Resin binders can degrade with certain cleaning products, leaving a hazy or blotchy surface.
  • Corian®: Does not require sealing, but regular buffing or refinishing may be needed to address ongoing wear.

Our Countertop Restoration Process

  1. Evaluation & Consultation
We begin by examining your countertop’s condition, identifying stains, chips, cracks, and surface wear. We’ll then propose a tailored plan that may involve repairs, refinishing, or sealing.

  2. Deep Cleaning & Preparation
Using stone-safe or surface-specific cleaning solutions, we remove grease, grime, or old coatings to create a clean slate for repairs and polishing.

  3. Expert Repairs
    • > Stone & Quartz: We utilize color-matched epoxy, resin, or fillers to address chips and cracks—restoring structural integrity and a seamless appearance.
    • > Corian®: Similar to quartz, we can fill chips and cracks with color-matched solid surface adhesive, then blend and sand for a near-invisible repair.

  4. Refinishing & Polishing
    • > Natural & Engineered Stone: We employ diamond abrasives to hone and polish surfaces to the desired finish—whether that’s a honed matte or a glossy shine.
    • >Corian®: We sand away scratches and dull areas, then buff to achieve Corian’s original consistent sheen.

  5. Sealing & Protecting (Where Applicable)
    • > Stone: We apply a high-quality sealer to guard against stains and etching.
    • > Quartz & Corian®: Typically do not require sealing; however, we’ll provide guidance on best practices for ongoing care and maintenance.

Care & Maintenance Tips

  1. Use Cutting Boards & Trivets
Protect against scratches and heat damage by placing hot items on trivets or using cutting boards for food prep.
  2. Clean Up Spills Immediately
Prompt cleanup minimizes risk of staining or discoloration, particularly on porous stones.
  3. Choose pH-Neutral Cleaners
Avoid harsh or acidic chemicals—especially on marble or Corian®, which can be more susceptible to surface damage.
  4. Regular Inspection
Keep an eye out for small chips or cracks and address them early to prevent larger, more costly repairs.
  5. Periodic Sealing (Stone Only)
Depending on usage and foot traffic, resealing natural stone countertops every 6–12 months helps maintain a robust protective layer.
